CU student dies of electrocution while hanging banner

CHITTAGONG UNIVERSITY, Sept 9, 2026 (BSS) - A student of Chittagong University (CU) died of electrocution while hanging a banner at the main gate of Shaheed Abdur Rab Hall last night.

The deceased was identified as Ariful Islam, a student of the Zoology Department of the 2024-25 academic session and a promising university athlete.

Witness said the incident occurred around 9:45 pm when Ariful was hanging a banner at the hall gate. He came in contact with an electric line, received an electric shock and fell from the structure.

Students rescued him and took him to the CU Medical Centre. The duty doctor Dr. Abu Tayeb provided emergency treatment and advised shifting him to a city hospital. However, he died on the way to the hospital.

Ariful was an active athlete and had won first place in the 800-metre event and second place in the 5,000-metre event at the university's annual sports competition. He also secured second place in the 800-metre event at an inter-university athletics competition.

Prof Dr Mosammat Rasheda Chowdhury, chairman of the Zoology Department, confirmed the matter.
