KISHOREGANJ, Sept 9, 2026 (BSS) - Two children drowned while taking bath in a pond in Mithamoin upazila of the district this morning.

The deceased was Joyonto, 7, son of Jewel Mondal of South Gopdighi areas under Gopdighi union of the upazila and Hafiza Akhter, 6, daughter of Abdul Kadir of the same area.

According to police and local sources, Joyonto and Hafiza went to a pond near their homes to take a bath together around 10.30 am. At one point, they drowned unnoticed by their family members.

When the children could not be found, family members started searching the surrounding areas. At one stage, Joyonto’s grandfather, Ananda Mondal, spotted Hafiza floating in the pond. Later, Joyonto was also found floating some distance away.

The children were rescued and rushed to Mithamoin Upazila Health Complex where the attending physician declared them dead.

Officer-in-Charge of Mithamoin Police Station Monowar Mohammad confirmed the matter and said after completing the necessary legal procedures, their bodies were handed over to their families.
