DHAKA, June 16, 2026 (BSS) - The holy month of Muharram of 1448 Hijri will begin in Bangladesh tomorrow as the moon was sighted in the country's sky today. As a result, the holy Ashura, commemorated on the 10th day of Muharram, will be observed on June 26 (Friday).

The decision was taken at a meeting of the National Moon Sighting Committee held this evening at the Baitul Mukarram conference room of the Islamic Foundation in the capital, said an official press release.

The meeting was chaired by Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Religious Affairs Md. Fazlur Rahman.

The committee reached the decision after reviewing reports on the sighting of the Muharram moon received from district administrations across the country, the Islamic Foundation's head office and its divisional and district offices, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department and the Space Research and Remote Sensing Organisation (SPARRSO).
