SAVAR, June 16, 2026 (BSS) - Fisheries and Livestock Minister Mohammad Amin Ur Rashid today said the government is working to expand Black Bengal goat farming to ensure the socio-economic development and self-reliance of marginal communities.
"To this end, a plan has been taken to establish one Black Bengal goat farm in each district of the country," he said.
He made the remarks while visiting the Goat Research Laboratory of the Bangladesh Livestock Research Institute in Savar today.
The minister said that with the goal of alleviating rural poverty and creating employment opportunities, the government led by then Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia during the 2001-2006 period had undertaken special initiatives for Black Bengal goat rearing.
At that time, programmes such as artificial breeding of goats, provision of loans on easy terms and free distribution of goats among poor women were implemented, he added.
He said the development activities of Black Bengal goats were hampered as the project did not continue steadily in the following years.
The present government has undertaken various initiatives to revive the heritage and potential of this breed.
The minister further said the government is implementing multifaceted programmes for the development of the country's livestock sector.
Necessary research and development activities have also been strengthened to conserve buffalo breeds and increase production.
