RANGPUR, Feb 7, 2025 (BSS) - A campaign organized by three environmental and social advocacy groups has been launched here today for ending fossil fuel dependency in Bangladesh.

The group began the nationwide awareness campaign titled “Breaking the Fossil Fuel Chain”, to promote renewable energy and build a sustainable future for all to protect the environment.

Development of Poor Society (DOPS), Coastal Livelihood and Environmental Action Network (CLEAN) and Bangladesh Working Group on Ecology and Development (BWGED) jointly launched the campaign.

The campaign is aiming to raise awareness about the adverse effects of fossil fuel while pushing for cleaner and community-driven energy alternatives.

The speakers said Bangladesh is remaining highly vulnerable to sea rising, extreme weather and environmental degradation as the impacts of climate change are intensifying.

They said Bangladesh dependence on fossil fuels and coal has made the situation very vulnerable for the country from both financial and economic contexts.

Climate activist student Anika Yasmin said, “We need to move away from our dependence on expensive LNG imported from abroad.

We need to develop our own renewable energy sources, which will provide sustainable energy to people at low cost,” she said.

Ujjal Chakraborty said, breaking away from the fossil fuel chain is not just an environmental issue; it is also a matter of social justice.

Bangladesh has the potential to lead the way in renewable energy adoption, but this requires urgent action from all sectors, he said.

Climate campaigners, journalists, students, members of the media, civil society organizations, and cross section people joined the campaign.
