61 pro-AL lawyers sent to jail in murder attempt case

DHAKA, April 6, 2025 (BSS) - A court here today sent to jail 61 pro-Awami League (AL) lawyers in a case lodged over assault, vandalizing and attempt to murder allegedly committed during July-August mass uprising.

The court also allowed bail to 19 others including former president of Dhaka Bar Association Abu Sayeed Sagar in the case.

Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Zakir Hossain Galib passed the order as the accused surrendered before the court and pleaded for bail. The court allowed bail to 18 women accused including Afroza Farhana Orange, Sahela Akter Shilpi, Salma Hai Tuni and Sharmin Sultana Likhon.

The 61 accused that were sent to jail include former president of Dhaka Bar Association Saidur Rahman Manik, Gazi Shah Alam, Anwar Hossain, Golam Kibria Sumon, Uzzal Miah, Nazrul Islam Shamim, and Mahfuzur Rahman Likhon, court custody (hajatkhana) in-charge sub-inspector Ripon Miah told BSS.

According to the case documents, the accused on August 4, 2024, gathered in front of Dhaka Bar Association building and expressed solidarity with the then government of Sheikh Hasina. They chanted different slogans at the time. As plaintiff Mohammad Ali Babu was going through the place, accused Anwar Shahdat Shaon pointed his gun at him, and another accused Wakil hit him with a rod.

"The other accused too started hitting him indiscriminately, punching and kicking him, knocking him down on the street. They vandalized chambers of the pro-BNP lawyers and furniture at the Dhaka Bar building," case documents added.

Plaintiff Mohammad Ali Babu filed the case on February 6 and the court after recording his statement, asked Kotwali Police Station officer in-charge to record the matter as first information report.

Meanwhile, the court today allowed bail to eight lawyers accused in a case lodged with Shahbagh Police Station over attack and vandalizing in Supreme Court in 2023.
