DMP to intensify mobile court drive against minor crimes, illegal occupations

DHAKA, May 8, 2025 (BSS) – The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has decided to intensify mobile court operations across the capital city to check minor crimes and evict illegal occupation on roads.  

“We have decided to intensify the operation of the mobile courts under the DMP areas to prevent small crimes and illegal occupations of the roads to make a city livable,” Deputy Commissioner and spokesperson of the DMP Muhammad Talebur Rahman told BSS.

The DMP has started the mobile court operations in its eight divisions two months back, he said, adding that eight special metropolitan magistrates have been appointed at the DMP to carry out the operations.

“DMP is always ready to maintain traffic discipline and take strict action against law violators,” he said.  

In this connection, the DMP has requested all including drivers to follow traffic rules and regulations to ensure discipline in traffic management.  
 
As part of the DMP’s move, the DMP had conducted separate mobile court operations in Dhaka Medical College (DMC) areas to evict the illegal occupants of the roads to prevent traffic congestion in the areas for ensuring easy movement of the vehicles carrying patients.  
The Special Metropolitan Magistrate of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has sentenced several people by conducting a summary trial court aimed at removing illegal structures and easing traffic congestion at the south gate of the DMC areas under the supervision of the Traffic Lalbagh Division.

DMP’s Special Metropolitan Magistrate Arifur Rahman sentenced several people on charges of illegal parking of various vehicles in the south gate area of DMC on May 6 last.

On the same day, three people were arrested and goods were seized by the magistrate on charges of illegally occupying at the sidewalk by placing temporary structures and shops on the main road in the same area.

A total of 477 cases have been disposed of in April by the Special Metropolitan Magistrate of DMP by conducting summary trial courts.

“As many as 105 individuals out of 943 arrested persons were sentenced to various jail terms in the summary trials in 477 cases in April,” Muhammad Talebur Rahman told BSS.

Serious crimes and crimes for which a light punishment is given can be tried in the Special Metropolitan Magistrate's Court in a summary manner in accordance with the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1898.

Law Officer (Additional District Judge) Mohammad Ataul Haque said that the Motijheel Division of DMP arrested 81 people in April and filed 36 cases against them in the Special Metropolitan Magistrate Summary Trial Court.

They were fined Taka 39,900 and 33 of them were sentenced to various jail terms.

On the other hand, the Wari Division of DMP arrested 30 people and filed 22 cases against them at summary trial court. They were fined Taka 19,150 and three of them were sentenced to different terms.

In addition, the Tejgaon division of the DMP arrested 98 people and filed 63 cases against them at summary trial court. They were fined Taka 26,500.

The DMP’s Gulshan division arrested 84 people and filed 57 cases against them at summary trial court and fined Taka 73,150.

The Lalbagh division of the DMP arrested 29 people and filed 24 cases against them at the court. They were fined Taka 48,700 and 11 of them were sentenced to different jail terms.

Ataul Haque said that the Mirpur division of the DMP arrested 488 people and filed 177 cases against them at the court. They were fined Taka 2,45,700 and 23 were sentenced to various terms.

In addition, the Uttara Division of DMP arrested 112 people and filed 77 cases against them at the court. They were fined Taka 94,700 and 35 were sentenced to various terms.

At the same time, the Ramna Division of DMP arrested 21 people and filed 21 cases against them in the Special Metropolitan Magistrate's Summary Trial Court and they were fined Taka 18,500.
