DHAKA, May 14, 2025 (BSS) - General Secretary of the Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) Kader Gani Chowdhury today said there is no specific law to protect journalists in the country.

"There are 32 laws in the country aimed at silencing media, yet not a single law exists to ensure the protection of journalists," he added.

Kader Gani Chowdhury, also Member Secretary of the Bangladesh Sammilita Peshajibi Parishad (BSPP), made the observation at a symposium held on the occasion of the anniversary of the online news portal 'News Narayanganj' in Narayanganj last night.

Shahjahan Shamim, Editor of News Narayanganj, presided over the programme, while Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Alamgir Hossain, Mahmoodur Rahman Suman, former lawmaker Gias Uddin, Abul Kalam, and Advocate Sakhawat Hossain, among others, also attended the event.

The BFUJ General Secretary emphasized the need to create a safe and independent environment for journalists so they can gather and disseminate news impartially.

He said journalists are considered the watchdogs of society, and the media is often called the mirror of society, adding that this mirror reflects the true image of the society.

"A journalist must always be vocal against injustice, irregularities, oppression, exploitation, and violations of rights," he said.

He urged journalists to work fearlessly and tirelessly, regardless of any threats.
