SIRAJGANJ, July 31, 2025 (BSS) – BNP Standing Committee Member and former minister Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku today said people have no understanding of the Proportionate Representation (PR) system and want elections to be held under the conventional system.
"People are unfamiliar with the PR system… they want elections in the traditional format, the restoration of democracy, and a strong as well as elected government to lead the nation," he said.
Tuku made the remarks as the chief guest while addressing a memorial meeting in front of the old Shaheed Minar on EB Road here this afternoon, commemorating the martyrs of July Uprising.
He said BNP has always supported reforms and agreed on many key issues, adding that if a government is elected with the people's mandate, it will implement all laws related to reform and public welfare.
Tuku said the Liberation War of 1971 was not led by a single party, but by the collective participation of the people who achieved independence through their sacrifice. Similarly, he added, all oppressed people took part in the student-popular uprising of July-August 2024.
He called upon all to remain vigilant so that no conspiracy can destroy the dream of the July-August uprising.
Presided over by Sirajganj district BNP Vice-President M Mokbul Hossain Chowdhury, the memorial meeting was also addressed, among others, by BNP Rajshahi Division Assistant Organizing Secretary and convener of the district BNP Conference Preparation Committee, M Amirul Islam Khan Alim.
