KHULNA, Aug 01, 2025 (BSS) - Speakers at a seminar in Khulna today stressed that a drug-free society can be achieved through collective efforts, emphasizing the importance of religious values, moral education and social awareness alongside strict law enforcement.
Addressing the event titled "The Role of Homeopathic Medicine Sellers, Doctors, Teachers, and Students in Drug Control," they urged all sections of society to stand united against the growing menace of drug abuse.
The seminar was held at the BMA Building and organized by local homeopathic doctors, medicine sellers and educators.
Md. Ahsanur Rahman, Additional Director of the Department of Narcotics Control (DNC), Khulna Divisional Office, attended the seminar as the chief guest while renowned homeopathic physician Dr. Syed Abu Sayeed presided over the event.
Deputy Director of the DNC's Khulna District Office Md. Mizanur Rahman, Divisional Intelligence Chief Sheikh Iftikhar Md. Umair, Khulna Homeopathic Medical College Principal Dr. Anisur Rahman Mintu, Vice-Principal Dr. N.M. Shamimul Islam, Khulna Press Club Member Secretary Rafiul Islam Tutul,and Daily Kaler Kantho Bureau Chief H.M. Alauddin were among the key speakers.
Dr. Zakirul Islam, a lecturer at Khulna Homeopathic Medical College and Hospital, presented the keynote paper.
He recommended sealing borders to curb drug smuggling, ending political patronage of drug dealers, ensuring government and private employees stay drug-free and transforming rehabilitation centers into truly drug-free spaces.
He also called for stronger legislation and effective enforcement to reduce drug availability and end its production.
Several speakers sharply criticized the misuse of homeopathic medicine outlets as fronts for drug trafficking, labeling those involved as "disgraces to the medical profession."
They emphasized that such individuals should not be considered doctors, and genuine practitioners must distance themselves from these unethical activities.
The speakers collectively called on families, educators, students, medical professionals and media personnel to uphold moral standards and fulfill their responsibilities with integrity.
They asserted that by working together with professionalism and ethical commitment, society can overcome drug abuse and related moral degradations.
