JAHANGIRNAGAR UNIVERSITY, Aug 23, 2025 (BSS) - Police today arrested dismissed Jahangirnagar University (JU) teacher Mahmudur Rahman Jony in connection with cases filed over July uprising.

A team from Savar Model Police Station detained Jony, 36, from a flat in Bank Town area early in the morning following a tip-off, said Officer-in-Charge (OC) Jewel Miah.

He was shown arrested in cases related to murder and attempted murder during anti-discrimination student movement, police said.

Jony, a former assistant professor of Public Health and Informatics at JU, hailed from Harua village under Kishoreganj Sadar upazila.

He studied in the Environmental Sciences Department in the 2006-07 academic session (36th batch) and had also served as president of the now-banned Bangladesh Chhatra League's JU unit.

The university syndicate, led by then vice-chancellor Professor Dr Md Nurul Alam, dismissed Jony on February 20, 2024, over allegations of moral turpitudes and fetal murder charges.

Earlier, in November 2022, he came under sharp criticism after an intimate photo with a newly appointed female lecturer went viral, followed by release of audio clips that allegedly exposed his coercive behaviour toward a female student.

Subsequent probes by JU committees found preliminary evidence of misconduct, leading to his permanent dismissal.
