SHERPUR, Aug 23, 2025 (BSS) – The top official of the country’s food office today said Bangladesh currently has record high reserve of food grains as far as rice and paddy were concerned.

“Currently 22.50 lakh metric tons of rice are stored in various food warehouses of the country,” Director General of the Directorate General of Food M Abul Hasanath Humayun Kabir told local reporters emerging from a meeting with food officials in this northern district.

Kabir said the government routinely stores food every year to deal with any disaster situation, keep control market price and ensure farmers to get fair prices for their produces.

The food office chief held a meeting in the district on the implementation of the ongoing government-sponsored Food-Friendly Programme (FFP) under which the vulnerable people possessing cards get rice with World Food Programme (WFP).

Kabir said the countrywide rice distribution under the FFP started this year from August 17 for next six months among 55 lakh cardholders.

Sherpur’s Deputy Commissioner Tarafdar Mahmudur Rahman chaired the meeting at the circuit house where concerned officials were present.
