DHAKA, Aug 24, 2025 (BSS) - BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi today urged the interim government to take immediate action to recover all illegal arms across the country ahead of the upcoming national parliamentary elections.
Speaking as the chief guest at a raincoat distribution event in the capital's Nayapaltan area, Rizvi said that the presence of illegal weapons poses a serious threat to the electoral process and national security.
"Ahead of the national election, Awami League's accomplices are lying in wait in various corners, including within the current administration," Rizvi said, adding, "If they get the opportunity, they will act against the interim government and the democratic process. Failure to recover illegal arms could make the election extremely dangerous."
Zia Parishad organised the event to mark the 81st birthday of BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia. Rickshaw and van drivers received raincoats as part of a humanitarian initiative.
Pro-Vice-Chancellor of National University Professor Md. Lutfor Rahman presided over the programme.
Rizvi also criticized what he described as a coordinated effort to create confusion within the administrative machinery.
"Those who observe politics have seen their misdeeds. Today, Awami League's allies are embedded in various parts of the administration, pushing their own agenda," he claimed.
The senior BNP leader said, "If the constitution or existing laws need to be amended in light of the July Charter, it must be done by an elected parliament. The fundamental principles of the state are crucial. If changes are necessary, they should be made according to constitutional provisions after a free and fair election and the formation of a people's government."
BNP Joint Secretary General Advocate Abdus Salam Azad, Zia Parishad Member Secretary Dr. Emtaj Hossain and Zia Parishad UK Vice President Barrister Rezaul Karim were also present at the event.
