2.41 crore meters of illegal fishing nets seized in past week

DHAKA, Sept 18, 2025 (BSS) - In the nationwide ongoing operation, the River Police seized over 2.41 crore meters of illegal fishing nets in the past seven days.  
 
They also arrested 248 individuals as part of the move to protect the country's fisheries resources and ensure safety on the waterways, said a press release of the force.
 
A total of 2,41,00,550 meters of illegal nets, 1869 kg of fish, and 210 kg of jellied shrimp were seized during the operations.  
 
However, 160 bushes were destroyed from the river.
 
The seized illegal nets and jellied shrimps were destroyed and the fish was distributed to the orphanage, the release said.
 
In the past seven days of operations, a total of 248 accused in 55 cases were arrested. Of the cases, 26 were lodged under the Fisheries Act, 16 for reckless driving, two for unauthorized extraction of sands, eight for unnatural deaths, one for extortion, and one under the Women and Children Act.
 
During the period, nine bodies were recovered.
 
In the weeklong operations, cases were filed against 74 bulkheads and five dredgers were seized due to having no legal documents.
