DHAKA, Sept 19, 2025 (BSS) - The Anti-Terrorism Unit (ATU) arrested Sakib alias Babu, 23, a fugitive death row convict from Tejturi Bazar under Tejgaon Police Station in the capital.
A press release issued by Barrister Mahfuzul Alam Russell, Superintendent of Police (Media and Awareness Wing) of ATU, confirmed the arrest.
According to the release, Sakib had escaped from Kashimpur High-Security Prison over a year ago and had been evading law enforcement since.
He was apprehended during a special operation conducted yesterday evening based on intelligence and a requisition from Konabari Police Station of Gazipur Metropolitan Police.
Sakib, son of Mojibur Matbor of Jazira upazila in Shariatpur district, was sentenced to death for the abduction and murder of 15-year-old Shakil Matbor, an eighth-grade student from East Naodoba village, on July 25, 2020.
Charges had been framed under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act, following which he was convicted and sentenced to death.
He had escaped from Kashimpur High-Security Prison on August 6 last year amid unrest and had been in hiding in various locations, including Dhaka.
After his capture, Sakib was handed over to Konabari Police Station for further legal action, the ATU press release added.
