PANCHAGARH, Dec 6, 2025 (BSS) - A mild cold wave has begun sweeping across the district as temperatures in the northern border district continue to fall faster than elsewhere in the country.

The mercury dipped to 10.5°C on Saturday morning—the lowest temperature recorded in Bangladesh so far this season, according to the Meteorological Department.

The Tentulia Meteorological Observatory reported the temperature at 9:00 am, with humidity at 94 percent. A day earlier, the temperature in the same area was recorded at 11°C, while Friday’s highest temperature reached 27°C.

Jitendranath Roy, officer-in-charge of the Tentulia Meteorological Observatory, confirmed the temperature drop and said that the region is now experiencing conditions close to a mild cold wave.

“If the temperature falls between 8°C and 10°C, it is officially considered a mild cold wave,” he said, adding that temperatures may dip further in December, potentially leading to a moderate cold wave.

Dense fog has also been blanketing the region from night until morning, disrupting daily activities.

Early morning workers are facing the brunt of the cold, struggling even with additional layers of clothing. Children, the elderly, and the ill are particularly vulnerable, and poor families are facing a worsening shortage of warm clothing.

Deputy Commissioner Kazi Md. Sayemuzzaman said that supporting cold-affected residents is the district administration’s top priority this winter. “We are working continuously to assist those suffering from the cold,” he said.

The Disaster Management Department has allocated Taka 30 lakh to the district, enabling the purchase and distribution of 8,640 blankets across 43 unions in five upazilas.

An additional 65,000 blankets have been requested from the ministry to meet growing demand.
