BARISHAL, Jan 8, 2026 (BSS) - Police arrested banded Awami League leader Tariqul Islam Tareq with firearm and local weapons from his residence at Awar village of Syedkathi union under Banaripara upazila of the district last night.

Tareq is a former member of the Banaripara upazila Awami League and joint general secretary of the Syedkathi union Awami League. 

The law enforcers arrested Tareq during a special operation conducted around 10:30 pm at Tareq's residence.

Confirming the matter, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Banaripara Police Station Mojibar Rahman said the operation was conducted based on a secret information. During the raid, police recovered one pipe gun, eight cartridges and local sharp weapons.

A case has been filed against Tareq under the Arms Act, the OC added.

He was produced before the court around noon on Thursday.
