DHAKA, Jan 18, 2026 (BSS) -Two people, including a street child, have been killed in separate road accidents in Dhaka’s Demra and Jatrabari areas on Saturday night.
An unidentified man, aged around 40, was killed in a head-on collision between a Laguna and a CNG-run auto-rickshaw on a bridge adjacent to the Demra staff quarters around 10:00pm on Saturday.
According to witnesses, the victim was standing near the bridge when the collision occurred, causing him to fall off after being struck by the vehicles.
Local people rescued him and rushed him to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) emergency department, where doctors declared him dead around 11:00pm.
Mohammad Rabiul Islam, who took the victim to the hospital, said the injured man told them before losing consciousness that he was a van driver, but he died before providing his identity or address.
In a separate incident, an 11-year-old street child named Mohammad Zahid was killed after being hit by a speeding truck while crossing the road in front of Donia College in Jatrabari around Saturday midnight.
Zahid’s classmates rescued him in a critical condition and took him to DMCH, where doctors declared him dead at around 1:45am on Sunday.
Mohammad Rabbi, a friend of the deceased, said they survive by collecting discarded water bottles, iron and tin cans from garbage dumps and selling them to scrap shops in Jatrabari.
The children usually spend nights under the Jatrabari flyover.
“At night, while we were crossing the road with sacks on our shoulders, a reckless truck hit Zahid, causing severe head injuries,” Rabbi said.
Inspector Mohammad Faruk, in-charge of the DMCH police camp, confirmed that the bodies of both victims were sent to the Dhaka Medical morgue for autopsy.
The incidents have been reported to the respective police stations for further investigation.
