
DHAKA, Jan 21, 2026 (BSS) - The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has arrested a 29-year-old man for allegedly blackmailing a Bangladeshi woman living in the United States into a fake marriage and extorting crores of taka by threatening to leak her private videos online.
The arrested accused has been identified as Md. Salauddin (29), son of Md. Selim and Nargis Akhter, a resident of Chhamdar Para under Satkania police station in Chittagong.
He was arrested on January 20, 2026, by the Cyber Intelligence and Risk Management Team of the Cyber Police Center (CPC) while hiding in Lohagara area of Chittagong.
According to the case statement, Salauddin first contacted the victim through a Facebook marriage platform named "BCCB Matrimonial: Heavenly Match."
He introduced himself using a fake identity, Nadim Ahmed Suman, claiming to be a Canadian expatriate and a widower.
To gain the victim's trust, he even arranged video calls where two accomplices posed as his mother and sister.
Investigators said the accused later conducted a so-called marriage through mobile phone communication.
Subsequently, he began seeking financial assistance from the victim, claiming he needed money to travel to America.
At one stage, Salauddin secretly recorded an objectionable video of the victim during a video call and threatened to spread it on the internet unless she paid him money.
Using blackmail and intimidation, he allegedly extorted approximately USD 125,000, equivalent to Taka 153,750,000, through multiple bank accounts and bKash transactions.
The victim's brother filed a case (No. 16, dated 11/01/2026) a with Mirpur Model Police Station (DMP) under Sections 406 and 420 of the Penal Code, and Sections 8(1), 8(2), and 8(7) of the Pornography Control Act, 2012.
After taking over the investigation, the CID tracked the accused's location and conducted a raid, recovering mobile phones and SIM cards used in the crime based on his confession.
During initial interrogation, Salauddin reportedly admitted that he had cheated 80 to 85 women using the same method.
Police records also reveal that he was previously accused in a similar case with Mohammadpur Police Station (Case No. 49, dated 06/04/2024) under the Pornography Control Act, 2012, and continued committing crimes even after being released on bail.
The CID stated that the investigation is ongoing to uncover the full extent of the crime, identify other victims and possible accomplices, and take further legal action.
Authorities have urged the public, especially women using online matrimonial platforms, to remain vigilant and verify identities thoroughly before engaging in personal or financial exchanges online.
