PANCHAGARH, Mar 24, 2026 (BSS) - State Minister for Water Resources Farhad Hossain Azad today inaugurated the excavation of the Jhinaikuri canal in Boda Upazila, aiming to restore lost biodiversity and maintain environmental balance as part of nationwide canal excavation efforts.
Speaking to reporters at the Pramanikpara area of Chandanbari Union, the State Minister said the government is working extensively to recover the country's natural ecosystems and ensure sustainable environmental health.
To mark the commencement of the project, Azad performed a symbolic act of manual soil cutting at the site.
He said that under a phased nationwide initiative, the government plans to excavate about 20,000 kilometers of canals across the country.
Highlighting the project's connectivity, the Minister noted that the work in Panchagarh follows successful inaugurations at Sahapara in Dinajpur and subsequent activities in Thakurgaon.
The State Minister added that the excavation of the Jhinaikuri canal will provide multiple benefits, including elimination of waterlogging, improved drainage, maintenance of year-round water flow, creation of fish farming opportunities, environmental restoration through tree planting along the canal, and construction of walking paths on both banks for public use.
