DHAKA, April 29, 2026 (BSS) - Md. Mizanur Rahman Minu, Minister for the Ministry of Land, was born on January 7 in 1958 in a respectable Muslim family. His ancestral house is at Shalbagan area of Rajshahi city and he presently lives at Bhadra residential area of Rajshahi metropolis.

His father late Md. Fazlar Rahman was an official of the British government and his mother late Latifa Khatun was a Hafez and housewife.

In his educational life, he completed his secondary education from Rajshahi Collegiate School and higher secondary from Rajshahi College. He completed his graduation degree from the University of Rajshahi.

Throughout his political career, he served in various important positions in Bangladesh Jatitabadi Chhatra Dal and Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal. Later, he served as a member of the Central Executive Committee of BNP, Co-Organizing Secretary, Organizing Secretary and Joint Secretary General.

Veteran politician Mizanur Rahman Minu has played a significant role in both local governance and national politics over several decades.

He was first elected mayor of Rajshahi City Corporation in 1991, becoming the youngest mayor in the country at the time. He later served two more terms in 1994 and 2001.

In 1994, he gained international recognition at a global mayors’ conference in Mexico for his contributions to child health, being acknowledged as one of the youngest mayors worldwide.

Minu was elected as a Member of Parliament from Rajshahi-2 in the 2001 national election. In 2026, he was re-elected from the same constituency in the 13th parliamentary elections and assumed office as Minister of the Land on February 17 of the same year. He also serves as a member of the advisory council of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).

During his tenure as mayor, Rajshahi saw notable urban development. In 2006, a study by the London School of Economics identified Rajshahi as the happiest city in Bangladesh. He also played an active role in resolving major national issues, including the Kansat rural electricity movement and the Phulbari-Barapukuria coal mine protests, through dialogue.

Minu has been actively involved in various political movements, from protests against the regime of Hussain Muhammad Ershad to more recent anti-government movements. Over the course of his political career, he has faced multiple imprisonments and allegations including a sedition case filed in 2021.

Beyond politics, Minu is known for his contributions to urban development, public service and environmental initiatives in Rajshahi. He is married and has one daughter and two sons. His wife Salma Shahadat serves as the Principal of a college in Rajshahi.
