CHOTTAGRAM, April 29, 2026 (BSS) - Lieutenant Md. Mohsinul Haque Chowdhury, Director of the Waterlogging Relief Project and 34 Engineer Construction, announced that water flow in Chattogram city has been restored to normal by removing temporary embankments in canals.
He explained that these embankments were necessary for dewatering during the construction of retaining walls along the canal.
Following heavy rainfall, water had accumulated at various points, including Probartak Moor. In response to this, work on the Hijra Canal was temporarily halted, and all temporary embankments were removed to ensure the smooth flow of water.
The water level at Probartak Moor subsided by 1:30 am after the canal was cleaned last night. Sixteen quick reaction teams have been established to monitor and address waterlogging issues in the city promptly. These teams will respond to waterlogged areas quickly, clean drains and canals and ensure effective drainage.
Efforts are underway to clear soil from various canals using 29 excavators and adequate manpower. Temporary embankments along canals have been removed by 8 am today, allowing water to flow freely. The ongoing project covers 36 out of 57 canals in the city, with plans to eliminate waterlogging in these areas once completed.
The City Corporation is working on cleaning the remaining 21 canals with a budget of Tk 45 crore allocated for the task. The goal is to address waterlogging issues comprehensively and improve drainage in the city.
There is a plan to address the waterlogging issue in Chattogram by focusing on 21 canals through a separate government project in the future. This initiative is expected to provide a long-term solution to the problem. The current waterlogging relief project, overseen by the army, has made significant progress, with about 95 percent of the work completed.
Most of the 36 canals included in the project have undergone excavation and retaining wall construction, nearing completion. The remaining tasks are set to be finished by June 2026 as per the revised deadline. The director of the waterlogging relief project believes that if the project is executed fully, it could reduce waterlogging in the city by approximately 75 percent.
