DHAKA, June 25, 2026 (BSS)- The government has undertaken an initiative to establish an integrated and interconnected toll network by replacing the existing separate Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) systems operating on roads, bridges, flyovers, expressways and tunnels across the country.
The decision was taken at a stakeholders’ meeting held yesterday in the conference room of the Bridges Division chaired by Bridges Division Secretary and Executive Director of the Bangladesh Bridge Authority Mohammad Abdur Rouf.
The meeting decided that the RFID-based ETC systems currently used at different toll plazas across the country would be brought under a central platform through Application Programming Interface (API) integration.
As a result, a unified and integrated network will replace the existing separate toll systems operating at Padma Bridge, Jamuna Bridge, Dhaka-Mawa Expressway, Jatrabari-Gulistan Flyover, Karnaphuli Tunnel and other locations.
To reduce customer inconvenience and simplify services, a policy decision has been taken to introduce a single RFID tag supplied by the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA), replacing the separate RFID tags currently used by different agencies.
At the same time, there are plans to develop an integrated mobile application through which users will be able to access all necessary services, including registration, toll payment, digital payments and traffic alerts.
Smart infrastructure and cashless transactions are among the key foundations of a modern transportation system and the expansion of expressways, tunnels and flyovers across different parts of the country has transformed the transport network. So, Introducing fully automated management systems at toll plazas is essential to make the system more efficient, bridges division secretary said.
Such a system would significantly reduce travel time and fuel wastage for vehicles, he said hoping that an effective, contemporary and practical roadmap would be presented to the government very soon based on the opinions and recommendations received from stakeholders.
Representatives from the Road Transport and Highways Division, Local Government Division, Information and Communication Technology Division, Bangladesh Bank, BRTA, Roads and Highways Department, Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), Bangladesh Road Transport Owners Association, Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity, various banks, mobile financial service providers and media organizations attended the meeting.
