CHATTOGRAM, July 16, 2026 (BSS) -  The foundation stone of 'Shaheed Wasim Akram Memorial' has been established at the entrance of Sholashahar Railway Station in the city, honoring Shaheed Wasim Akram, the first Chhatra Dal leader who embraced martyrdom in Chattogram during the July Uprising.

State Minister for Liberation War Affairs Ishraq Hossain officially inaugurated the construction of the memorial at approximately 1:30 pm on Thursday, July 16.

Abu Sufian, MP, Shaheed Wasim Akram's father Shamsul Alam, Chhatra Dal Central General Secretary Nasir Uddin Nasir, Chattogram Divisional Commissioner Dr. Muhammad Ziauddin, and Deputy Commissioner Md. Zahidul Islam Miah, among others, addressed the function as special guest.

After laying the foundation stone, State Minister Ishraq Hossain said, “Those who lost their lives, were injured, or suffered during the violent mass uprising of July 24 as part of anti-fascist movement. The heinous massacre of innocent students aimed at ending a 17-year-long dictatorial regime has received international acknowledgment from the United Nations."

He further stated, "We will take steps to establish memorials in every district to honor Shaheed Wasim and all other martyrs. Our commitment is to create a non-discriminatory and democratic Bangladesh. The fascist murderer Hasina and her party will never again be allowed to impose their politics in this nation. Additionally, those responsible for this genocide will be held accountable and brought to justice promptly."

Shamsul Alam, the father of Shaheed Wasim Akram, said, "Today, I see thousands of my children gather here. I earnestly urge everyone to refrain from creating divisions among themselves. We must unite to build our country”.

The event was attended by senior administrative officials, local political leaders, and a significant number of students in the function.
