BRAC university volunteers team conducts relief efforts in Matiranga, Khagrachhari

DHAKA, July 19, 2026 (BSS) – In response to the recent flash flood and incessant monsoon rain in Chittagong region, BRAC University has sent a volunteer team to Matiranga, Khagrachhari to carry out relief and rehabilitation efforts for flood-affected communities in the hilly district.

Led by a senior lecturer, the team comprised students from the Department of Disaster Management and Environmental Studies (DMES) under its club Disaster Management and Climate Forum (DMCF), said a press release here today.

Matiranga under Khagrachhari district was adversely affected by the heavy monsoon rain where more than 150 indigenous and local Bengali families lost their houses and livelihoods due to the natural disaster.

The team reached Guimara in Khagrachhari on Friday morning and later visited to the affected Haridhan Mog para, Tapta Master Para, Kacha Kola, Ramdayal Para, Shapmara and Wachu Para under Matiranga upazila to assess damage caused by the floods and incessant rains and identify the relief needs of the affected communities.

Later, they distributed a total of 900kg of rice, 300 leaves of paracetamol, 900 packets of saline, 150 liters of edible oil, 300 kg of onions, 75 kg of salt, ‘Chira’ (flattened rice), biscuits and oral saline, personal hygiene materials and clothes among the distressed indigenous and Bengali communities.

The care package included 5 kg of rice, one kg pulse 250 g packet of ‘Chira” two leaves paracetamol tablets, six packets of oral saline, one liter of soybean oil, two kg of onion, 500gm packet of salt.

On July 18 (Saturday), the packages were loaded in trucks and taken to the following three distribution centres - Haridhan Mog Para, Shapmara Government Primary School, Washu Para at Haridhan Mog Para for distribution among the affected people.

Besides, the BRAC volunteers team also distributed some corrugated iron-sheet and materials among the distressed people, whom lost their dueling house in the disaster. They also help them build the houses.
