Legal Aid recovers Tk 387.82 crore as compensation for indigent litigants

DHAKA, Aug 13, 2026 (BSS) - The National Legal Aid Services Organization (NLASO) has recovered Taka 387 crore 81 lakh 92 thousand 745 as compensation for indigent litigants.

The information was disclosed in a report published on the website of the National Legal Aid Services Organization, providing details of legal assistance provided through Legal Aid from 2009 to July 2026.

Initially, legal services were provided to indigent people at the district level. Later, the services were extended to the Supreme Court, Labour Legal Aid Cells in Dhaka and Chattogram, and prisons across the country.

According to the report, a total of Taka 387 crore 81 lakh 92 thousand 745 was realized  as compensation for indigent litigants through pre- and post-case legal assistance. 

Of this, Taka 380 crore 78 lakh 11 thousand 379 was recovered through the 64 District Legal Aid Offices, while Taka 7 crore 3 lakh 81 thousand 366 was recovered through the Labour Legal Aid Cells in Dhaka and Chattogram.

During this period, 1,563,566 beneficiaries received legal assistance at government expense under the National Legal Aid Services Organization.

The legal services are being provided through 64 District Legal Aid Offices, the Supreme Court Legal Aid Office, Labour Legal Aid Cells in Dhaka and Chattogram, and the National Helpline Call Centre for government legal assistance (toll-free-16699).

The services are provided at government expense under the Legal Aid Services Act to provide legal assistance to financially disadvantaged and incapacitated litigants in the country. The activities of the National Legal Aid Services Organization are conducted under the Law and Justice Division of the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs.
