TANGAIL, Sept 1, 2026 (BSS) - State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock Sultan Salauddin Tuku today said democracy has triumphed in Bangladesh under the leadership of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).

"Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman gave the people multiparty democracy after ending BAKSAL. The people of this country nurtured democracy under BNP leadership," he said.

The state minister made the remarks while addressing a public rally as chief guest at Shaheed Smriti Poura Udyan in Tangail city, marking BNP's 48th founding anniversary.

He said former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia waged a nine-year movement for democracy and that parliamentary democracy was established through her struggle.

BNP led pro-democracy movements, including the 2024 student-people uprising, he added.

"Tuku said the BNP, founded by Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, the proclaimer of independence, had never acted against democracy."

Highlighting government initiatives, he said the six-month-old government had begun implementing its electoral pledges, including Family Cards, Farmer Cards, salaries and allowances for imams and muezzins, canal excavation, tree plantation, and distribution of bags and uniforms among school students.

He warned that conspiracies were underway to undermine Bangladesh's independence, sovereignty and democracy, urging people to unite against anti-democratic forces.

Tangail District unit of BNP President Hasanuzzamil Shaheen presided over the rally, while former District BNP Member Secretary Mahmudul Haque Sanu moderated it.

Among others, Mawlana Bhashani Science and Technology University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr ABM Shahidul Islam, former District BNP Vice-President Ali Imam Tapan and BNP leaders and activists attended the event.
