GM Zia Memorial chess begins

DHAKA, July 5, 2025 (BSS) - The GM Zia Memorial chess tournament, in memory of country's renowned Grand Master Ziaur Rahman, has begun at the hall-room of Bangladesh Chess Federation (BCF) today (Saturday).

Syed Sujauddin Ahmed, president of BCF and former Secretary formally inaugurated the meet as the chief guest.

Aminul Islam NDC, secretary of National Sports Council, International woman master Rani Hamid and Tasmin Sultana wife of GM Zia were present as special guests.
 
Dr. Shoeib Reaz Alam, vice president of BCF and DIG of Bangladesh Police presided over the opening ceremony.

A total of 66 players, including four International Masters, one Woman International Master and twelve FIDE Masters from Bangladesh, India and Nepal are participating in the event.

The event is being held in a nine-round Swiss-league format and cash prize of Taka five lac taka will be given to winners.
