DHAKA, Oct 28, 2025 (BSS) - Bangladesh Women's team captain Nigar Sultana Joty admitted that their poor batting performance led to their downfall in the ICC Cricket World Cup.
The Tigresses targeted at least two victories in the showpiece event but came back with just one. After their victory against Pakistan in the opening game, they lost five matches on the trot before their final game against India was abandoned due to rain.
They even could have lost that match too but rain saved them and gave one valuable point, which saw them leapfrog Pakistan into seventh in the final standings on net run rate.
However in reality, Bangladesh were totally outclassed in two matches-against New Zealand and Australia but they put up a huge fight in other matches, only to lose those matches in surreal fashion.
While putting blame on the batters, Joty also took the responsibility of the failure on her own shoulders as the Women's team returned home today.
Speaking to the media at the airport, Joty said, "We batted poorly, which was the reason behind our downfall. I would definitely say that I could not bat well."
"My off-form actually hurt the team more. When the top order bats well, the team is benefitted but as a top order batter, I couldn't bat well."
Although Joty blamed her own performance, she praised the performance of Sharmin Akhtar Supta, Rubya Haider Jhilik and Sobhana Mostari.
However, she admitted that these performances won't be of any use if the team is not consistent.
"Supta Apu scored regularly and I would say Sobhana did very well. There were some small cameos in one or two matches. Shorna played very well. Jhilik gave a very good start. So, if we could be consistent as a team, it would have been possible to win the big matches."
Expectation was high on pacer Marufa Akter but she couldn't come up with the terms.
"Marufa was very consistent with the new ball. But sometimes in one or two matches she collapsed. While she was very good with the new ball, she perhaps lost rhythm in middle overs."
