NETROKONA, April 22, 2025 (BSS) - A ‘field day’ was held here this morning to select high yielding indigenous rice varieties for cultivation.

The event was organized by the Tushaipar Farmers' Organization with the support from the research and resource center of BARCIK, a non-governmental non-profitable organization.

A total of 21 farmers from various upazilas of Netrokona district participated in the field day.

Farmers cultivated 40 varieties of Boro paddy on a plot of land using only organic fertilizer for research purposes in Rameswarpur village of Atpara Upazila in the district.

After observing the panicles of the 40 rice varieties, they selected a total of eight strains: four indigenous varieties and four breed by the farmers themselves.

The selected indigenous rice varieties are “Desi Jira”, “Choraiksha”, “Banshful”, and “Puittaijong”. The farmer-breed varieties chosen from the research are “Junty”, “M252”, “Parija”, and “DS 3,4”.

All of these selected varieties are new and high-yielding, no need for other chemical fertilizers for cultivating these varieties.
