MANIKGANJ, Sept 1, 2025 (BSS) - Papaya growers in the district are delighted as they have achieved bumper production this season with good market prices.

According to the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE), a target was set to cultivate papaya on 850 hectares of land in the district with an expected production of 17,000 metric tons. But this year, both the cultivation area and production have exceeded the target, sources added.

A large area of Singair upazila has turned green with papaya fields. Farmers are now busy harvesting and sending their produce to different parts of the country, including Dhaka.

Md Juran Khan, 40, and Bhanu Bibi, 36, of Char Azimpur village cultivated papaya on five bighas of land each. They said they are expecting a profit of Tk 8 to 9 lakh this year.

During a recent visit to different areas, a large number of buyers and trucks were seen waiting to purchase papaya from the farmers, while workers were engaged in godowns.

Md Mohi Uddin, 52, another cultivator, said papaya has high demand in the markets. He added that papaya is currently being sold at Tk 20 to 25 per kilogram, which is profitable.

Deputy Director of the DAE Dr Robiah Noor Ahmed said the soil of Singair upazila is highly suitable for papaya cultivation. As a result, quality papaya grows abundantly here.
