Tokyo's Nikkei index, shaken by US tariffs, closes down 4%

TOKYO, March 31, 2025 (BSS/AFP) - Tokyo's key Nikkei index closed down four percent on Monday, with investors spooked ahead of the imposition this week of tariffs announced by US President Donald Trump.

The benchmark Nikkei 225 index ended down 4.05 percent, or 1,502.77 points, at 35,617.56 -- its lowest level since September -- while the broader Topix index was down 3.57 percent, or 98.52 points, to 2,658.73.
