DHAKA, Oct 7, 2025 (BSS) - Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman today said BNP seeks support and cooperation from teachers in the upcoming elections to establish a knowledge and merit-based state and government.
“The spontaneous support of the people is needed to implement all the plans taken by BNP for the development of state-politics and government. The support of teachers, the most conscious part of the society, is needed,” he said.
Tarique Rahman was virtually addressing the teachers' rally at Suhrawardy Udyan on the occasion of The World Teachers' Day.
The BNP acting chairman also pledged to form a high-level commission to ensure the financial security of teachers and nationalize them if BNP is voted to power through the people's vote.
He said educational institutions and universities will be turned into the heart of education and research.
There is no other option in the current context to transform the curriculum into technical and practical education at the school level, he said.
Tarique Rahman said the biggest challenge before the country at this moment is to survive as an influential nation-state with dignity in this competitive world.
“To face this challenge, we have to be enriched in money, talent, thinking, knowledge and science. We have to establish a knowledge-based state and society,” he said.
Stating that the country's teachers are one of the main driving forces to build a knowledge-based state and society, the BNP acting chairman said, if they remain weak, it is not possible to build the state on a strong foundation.
“I can remember a saying of the world-famous physicist Albert Einstein about teachers. He said it is the supreme art of the teacher to awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge," said Tarique Rahman.
He said it is necessary to ensure the financial security of teachers in the state and society as well as social respect.
Tarique Rahman said the current number of educational institutions in the country may not be high compared to the population, but if all will have to work together to ensure the quality of teachers-students and existing educational institutions.
“On the one hand, we can make the foundation of our education at the school-college level of international standards and turn universities into centres of education and research, then we will reach our desired goal,” he said.
Tarique Rahman said there is no alternative to transforming the country's education system from textbook-based to a practical and technical education system from the school level.
As a responsible political party, BNP has already started formulating the necessary action plan with experts,” he mentioned.
He said BNP is working on a realistic plan to formulate such an education management so that teachers can present themselves as role models in front of the students with confidence.
In BNP's action plan, we are also working on specific and practical steps to ensure the financial and social security of teachers,” he said.
Tarique Rahman said it is necessary to make the teaching profession competitive in terms of opportunities and respect by ensuring financial security and enhancing social respect for teachers in the country's teaching community, especially at the primary, secondary and higher secondary levels of schools and madrasas.
Tarique Rahman said BNP believes that the respect and dignity of teachers in the state and society are related to the status and image of the state.
“If the corrupt are wealthy, the image of the state and society decreases, and if the status of teachers in the society is upheld, the image of the society increases,” he said.
Tarique Rahman said, “I would like to share with you one of my plans regarding teachers. Every year, on various important national days, including Bangladesh's Independence Day or Victory Day, the President and the Prime Minister invite people from different classes and professions to the state buildings on state initiatives. They exchange greetings. I think it is important to mandatorily invite at least one teacher from primary and secondary schools to the list of invitees on such national days.”
He said if necessary, the warrant of precedence or state rank order must be re-evaluated to ensure that the status of education and teachers in the state and society is upheld.
“Because, I firmly believe that when students see the respectful position and behaviour of their 'role model' teachers at the highest level of the state, it will definitely have a positive impact on the psyche of the young students,” he said.
BNP definitely agrees with the just demands of the teachers in principle, he said.
He said if BNP is voted to power, an 'Education Reform Commission' will be formed on a priority basis to reorganize the existing education curriculum by focusing on practical and technical education.
“If urgent steps are not taken to introduce a work-oriented education system in the light of morality and religious and social values ??and to modernize the education system, it will become difficult for us to survive in global competition,” he said.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was the main speaker of the rally with BNP Organizing Secretary (Cumilla Division) and Chairman of the Teachers’ and Employees’ Unity Alliance Principal Md. Selim Bhuiyan in the chair.
Former State Minister for Education Dr. ANM Ehsanul Haque Milon and National University Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. ASM Amanullah also spoke.
