TUNGIPARA, Gopalganj, Jan 8, 2024 (BSS) - The 11th death anniversary of journalist, columnist, writer, leftist politician, and freedom fighter Nirmal Sen was observed in the district today.

The Nirmal Sen Smriti Sangsad paid rich tributes to Nirmal Sen's portrait by placing a wreath at Tungipara in Gopalganj in the morning.

A special prayer was offered seeking eternal peace of Nirmal Sen.

Later, a commemorative meeting was held with Nirmal Sen Smriti Sangsad President Ratan Sen Kangkan in the chair.

Nirmal Sen was born to Surendranath Sen Gupta and Labanya Prova Sen Gupta of Dighipar village of Kotalipara on August 3, 1930.

He was the fifth among five brothers and three sisters. During the partition, Nirmal's parents went to Kolkata along with his siblings.

Nirmal however stayed back due to his unbound love for his motherland.

He grew up in his aunt's house and completed his secondary education in 1944, at the age of 14. He passed his ISC from Barishal BM College and BA and Masters from University of Dhaka.

He started his political career with the "Leave India" movement while studying in school.

Nirmal Sen was an active member of the revolutionary organization "Anushilan Samiti" in his college days. Later he joined Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP).

He also worked as the general secretary of the Shramik Krishak Samajbadi Dal (Labour Farmer Socialist Party) for a long time.

He started his journalism career in 1959 with the Daily Ittefaq. He then worked for newspapers like Daily Azad, Daily Pakistan, and Dainik Bangla.

He was the president of Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ). He also taught as a guest lecturer in the journalism department of University of Dhaka.

Nirmal Sen is also well known as a writer. His mentionable works are Purbo Pakistan Theke Bangladesh, Manush Shomaj Rashtro, Berlin theke Moscow, Ma Jonmobhumi, Shabhabik Mrittur Guarantee Chai, Amar Jibon 71 er Juddho and Amar Jobanbondi.

He breathed his last on January 8, 2013, at the age of 83 years.
