People throng banks to collect new currency ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr in Khulna

KHULNA, March 31, 2024 (BSS) - People from all walks of life today (Sunday) thronged different banks in the city to collect new currency ahead of the holy Eid-ul-Fitr, the largest festival of the Muslims.
 
Earlier, Bangladesh Bank issued a circular that people can collect new currency including Taka 100, Taka 50, Taka 20 and Taka 10 from March 31, Sumon Kumar Roy, Agrani Bank Manager (General Banking Department) of Clay Road Branch confirmed to BSS today.
 
As per the circular, each person can collect a total of Taka 18,000 or below with Taka 10,000 of 100-Taka-Note, Taka 5,000 of 50-Taka-Note, Taka 2,000 of 20-Taka-Note and Taka 1,000 of 10-Taka-Note from today, he said, adding that currency distribution will continue last day of banking before the holy Eid-ul-Fitr.
 
This year, Bangladesh Bank issued a circular that each person can get new currency by submitting a photocopy of his NID card along with mobile number, he said.
 
In Khulna, a total of 15 banks including Sonali Bank PLC, Agrani Bank PLC, Janata Bank PLC are selected to distribute new currency, he added.
 
While visiting Agrani Bank PLC of Clay Road and Sir Iqbal Road Branch today, this reporter witnessed a long queue of people who waited in line from morning to collect new currency.
 
Talking to BSS, Shahidul Islam, an employee of City's Modhumoti Printing Press Ltd, said he was standing before the counter of the bank from 10:30am to 12:00pm at the Agrani Bank PLC of Sir Iqbal Road branch for collecting some new currency and collected his required money at around 12:00pm.
 
"Though it's a little bit late, I am very pleased to get new notes before Eid, while he expressed his satisfaction.
 
Md Anwarul Kabir, General Manager (Banking) of Agrani Bank PLC of Sir Iqbal Road Branch told BSS, due to server problems people suffered for a while to collect new currency.
