Building up capacity of flood-volunteer to reduce loss of life, properties underscored

GAIBANDHA, April 26, 2024 (BSS)- Speakers in a function here underscored the
need for building up capacity of the flood volunteers to reduce loss of life
and properties during the emergencies.

"Geographically the Fulchhari upazila is located in flood-prone areas, that's
why most portions of the upazila experiences flood every year creating untold
sufferings including losses of life and damaging crops and other properties.
In this context, the flood volunteers can play a responsible role to reduce
loss of life and properties if they are trained properly," they said.

They made the comments while addressing a project experience sharing meeting
at upazila level held at the conference room of Fulchhari Upazila Nirbahi
Officer (UNO) in the district on Thursday afternoon.

FRIENDSHIP, a leading NGO of the country, arranged the function under the
"Formation and Capacity Building Flood Volunteers Project" funded by
Luxembourg with UNO Jagatbanbhu Mondal in the chair.

Upazila Agriculture Officer Mintu Miah, Upazila Rural Development Officer
Sohel Rana, Sub-Assistant Engineer Abdul Hadi, Assistant Programmer Kazal
Miah and Fulchhari Union Parishad (UP) Chairman Azharul Hannan and journalist
Shah Alam Jadu spoke at the view-sharing meeting among others.
 
The speakers emphasized for formation of more flood volunteers to save the
flood victims from the devastation during the emergencies.

UNO Jagatbandhu Mondal urged the flood volunteers to be more serious and
dedicated to stand beside the flood victims aimed at reducing the loss of
life and properties during the emergency of natural calamities.

Earlier, the flood volunteers pointed out their obstacles and problems in the
meeting while performing their duties during the flood.

The project officials heard them and assured them of solving the obstacles
and problems faced by volunteers as early as possible.
 
Many recommendations raised by the participants were also adopted during the
open discussion session to run the project in the upazila peacefully in the
days to come.

Upazila level officials, NGO activists, invited persons, public
representatives and mass media men attended the meeting.
