'Kazi Nazrul, a poet of equality, harmony, love and rebellion'

KHULNA, May 26, 2025 (BSS) - Highlighting the National Poet Kazi Nazrul's poem and songs for anti-discrimination and the deprived people in the society, the Khulna Divisional Commissioner Md Firoz Sarker said poet Nazrul Islam was a poet of equality, harmony, love, rebellion, and for masses.

The observation came at a discussion held at the Khulna District Shilpakala Academy Auditorium on Sunday evening, marking the 126th birth anniversary of the National Poet.

Speaking as the chief guest, Khulna Divisional Commissioner Md Firoz Sarker said Nazrul was a fearless voice against tyranny and superstition who stood for the deprived and marginalized sections of society.

"Nazrul fought against oppression and endured persecution and injustice. Yet, he rose against tyranny and never stopped, even while enduring hunger and suffering," he said.

This year's theme for Nazrul Jayanti is "The Mass Uprising of '24: The Legacy of Kazi Nazrul."

In his speech, the Divisional Commissioner said Nazrul's writings were used as powerful tools during the 2024 student movement, where they appeared in slogans and wall graffiti, igniting the spirit of resistance among the youth.

"His literature played a significant role in every phase of the mass movement of 2024. Powerful slogans like 'Break down the iron gates of the prison!' echoed through student voices," he added.

Referring to Nazrul's lasting impact on generations, he said, "His writings showed the youth the light of direction. Therefore, we must embrace Nazrul's ideals and work for the welfare of the country and its people."

Dr Md Dulal Hossain, Professor of the Bangla Department at Khulna University, presented the keynote paper, while Khulna Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Saiful Islam presided over the function.

Among others, Khulna Metropolitan Police Commissioner Md Zulfikar Ali Haider, Additional Divisional Commissioner (Education and ICT) Deb Prasad Pal, and Principal of Government Brozolal College Professor Sheikh Md Humayun Kabir also addressed the discussion.

Khulna Additional Deputy Commissioner (Development) Nurul Hai Mohammad Anas delivered the welcome speech.
