RANGPUR, May 28, 2025 (BSS) - Speakers at a views-exchange meeting have said that democracy and good governance are complementary to each other, and the media can play a crucial role in establishing democracy and good governance.

They expressed the view in the meeting titled 'Role of Media in Establishing Democracy and Good Governance' held at the Aditmari upazila parishad conference room in Lalmonirhat district on Tuesday afternoon, a local PID press note said.

The Rangpur Regional Information Office of PID organized the meeting for local journalists.

Assistant Information Officer Ayesha Siddika also addressed the event moderated by Assistant Information Officer Md Rupal Mia.

The chief guest said media is the fourth pillar of the state. It plays an important role in establishing transparency and accountability in government activities.

"The general people can know through the media how and to what extent government policies and activities are being implemented ," he said.

He said that just as it is not possible to establish democracy without the media, it is also important to ensure good governance to strengthen democracy.

He called on media workers to work in establishing democracy and good governance by publishing true and objective information from their respective positions.

Farhad Ahmed said that an independent, objective and responsible media acts as a bridge between the government and the people. "The media creates awareness against several inconsistencies, corruption and irregularities in society, which is crucial for good governance," he said.

The participating journalists at the event urged the interim government to take immediate steps to shut down unregistered media outlets and called for the enactment of a Journalist Protection Act to ensure the safety of journalists in their professional work.
