Meeting on ensuring post-flood reproductive health services held

KURIGRAM, May 28, 2025 (BSS) - A special meeting of the Sexual Reproductive Health (SRH) Working Group was held at the Terre des Hommes conference room here on Tuesday evening to ensure emergency reproductive health services during and after the floods. 

 
LAMB Hospital organized the meeting with the support of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) to ensure maternal and newborn health services during the floods and natural disasters in the Kurigram district. 
 

Additional Director General (Planning and Development) of the Directorate General of Health Services Professor Dr Sheikh Sayidul Haque was present as the chief guest at the meeting. 

 
Civil Surgeon of Kurigram Dr Swapan Kumar Biswas presided over the event. 

 
Among others, Kurigram General Hospital Superintendent Dr Md Shahidullah, Deputy Director of Family Planning Department Md Modabber Hossain, UNFPA Bangladesh Program Analyst Md Shamsuzzaman and UNICEF Health Manager Dewan Mohammad Emdadul Haque spoke as special guests.

 
Reproductive Maternal Neonatal Child-Adolescent Health (SRMNCAH) project manager of LAMB Hospital Mahatab Liton highlighted the project activities related to reproductive health. 

 
UNFPA Program Analyst Md Shamsuzzaman delivered a PowerPoint presentation on maternal and reproductive health care at the meeting. 

 
He said, "A more advanced plan has been taken in the continuation of the activities that UNFPA and LAMB have conducted in the past on how to ensure services during floods and other natural disasters." 

 
The chief guest said, "Pregnant mothers and newborns are the most vulnerable in natural disasters like floods. Ensuring their health care is very important. I thank LAMB, UNFPA and UNICEF for such a humanitarian plan." 

 
Modabber Hossain said, "To increase institutional delivery, at least four checkups should be ensured during pregnancy. Field level officers should be active during the flood period." 

 
Dewan Mohammad Emdadul Haque said, "The Health and Family Planning Department is working sincerely to ensure reproductive health services, which will help improve the health indicators of the district." 
 
The Civil Surgeon said, "It is difficult to provide reproductive health services in the reality of the flood-affected Kurigram district. However, the coordinated efforts of national and international development agencies make our work easier." 

 
All Upazila Health and Family Planning Officers, Medical Officers (Gynecologists), Medical Technologists, BRAC, Friendship, other members of the SRH Working Group and representatives of various development agencies were present in the meeting. 

 
The participants shared their opinions and suggestions to make healthcare activities more effective during and after the floods.
