RANGPUR May 29, 2025 (BSS) - A court has sentenced eight people to life imprisonment for murdering farmer Selim Uddin of Kamalpur village under Mithapukur upazila of the district more than 12 years ago.
Special Judge (District and Sessions Judge) of the Rangpur Special Judge's Court Md Haider Ali announced the verdict in a crowded courtroom on Thursday afternoon in the presence of the convicts.
The prosecution says that on December 7, 2012, farmer Selim Uddin and accused Abdus Samad had an argument over a land issue in Kamalpur village of Mithapukur upazila of Rangpur.
At one stage, Abdus Samad, along with a group of people, attacked Selim Uddin and hacked him to death on the spot.
Akmal Hossain, son of the deceased Selim Uddin, then filed a murder case with Mithapukur police station.
After the investigation, the police filed a charge sheet against 14 people in the court.
After recording the testimonies and interrogation of 22 witnesses in the case, eight accused Abdus Samad, Anwarul Islam, Abdur Rashid, Jamiul Islam Dollar, Saju Mia, Abu Bakkar, Abdul Mannan and Intaj Mandal were sentenced to life imprisonment.
The court imposed a fine of Taka 10,000 on each of them and ordered an additional three months in prison in default of payment of the fine.
At the same time, the court acquitted six others because the charges against them were not proven.
Rangpur Additional Public Prosecutor Advocate Rebecca Sultana Fancy stood for the state and senior lawyer Advocate Rashid Chowdhury defended the accused side during the hearing of the case.
