DHAKA, Aug 21, 2025 (BSS) - Bangladesh has inaugurated its first-ever Traffic Management Center (TMC) at Sarak Bhaban in the capital, aimed at easing congestion, improving road safety and ensuring greater efficiency on national highways.
The center has been set up under the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA)-funded project titled "Improving the Reliability and Safety on National Highway Corridors of Bangladesh through the Introduction of Intelligent Transport System (ITS)" (2020-2025), with a grant assistance of US$8.93 million.
Initially covering the N8 Dhaka-Mawa Expressway, a key-route connecting to the Padma Bridge, the TMC is equipped with advanced ITS technologies, enabling real-time traffic monitoring, speed tracking, data analysis and incident management.
Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Bangladesh Park Young-sik attended the inauguration event, held on Wednesday, as the chief guest while Bridge Division Secretary Mohammad Abdur Rouf was present as guest of honour, said a press release here today.
KOICA Country Director Jihoon Kim, RHD Chief Engineer Syed Moinul Hasan, BRTA Chairman Abu Momtaz Saad Uddin Ahmed, senior officials of the Roads and Highways Department, Korea Expressway Corporation and Bangladesh Highway Police were also present.
Speaking on the occasion, Ambassador Park said Korea was proud to support Bangladesh's sustainable infrastructure and connectivity initiatives.
Calling the TMC a "Landmark Achievement" in road safety and transport modernization, Secretary Mohammad Abdur Rouf said it would play a vital role in enhancing efficiency of highway operations.
BRTA Chairman Abu Momtaz Saad Uddin Ahmed noted that the system could eventually be integrated with vehicle inspection and driver databases to strengthen enforcement and compliance with road safety regulations.
