MADRID, Nov 26, 2025 (BSS/AFP) - A large fire broke out at a hospital in the Spanish city of Cartagena Wednesday, forcing staff to partly evacuate it, emergency services said, though no injuries were reported.

The fire erupted early in the morning in the southeastern city and engulfed the front of one of the buildings at Cartagena's Santa Lucia hospital, sending a thick cloud of black smoke into the air in images broadcast by Spanish media.

"Firefighters have brought the fire under control," emergency services said on social media.

"Hospital staff evacuated patients from the block and neighbouring areas to safer rooms."

The local mayor's office for the port city of 200,000 people said in a statement the fire had started outside the hospital and advanced because of "violent winds", reaching at least two of the building's floors.

Firefighters were still inspecting the area, it said.
