GAIBANDHA, AUG 4, 2025 (BSS) - Water levels of major rivers in the district rose sharply in the last 24 hours till Monday 9am due to heavy rain and hilly water from upstream India, officials said.

Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) sources said the Teesta rose by 350cm and was flowing 13cm above danger level at Kawnia, while the Brahmaputra, Karotoa, and Ghagot are flowing below danger levels.

Low-lying areas in Sundarganj, Sadar, Fulchhari, and Shaghata upazilas have been flooded, marooning many.

BWDB Executive Engineer Md. Hafizul Haque said river levels may rise further. Officials remain alert to protect embankments.

District authorities are fully prepared with relief, said DRRO Md. Shafiqul Islam.
