CHATTOGRAM, Aug 4, 2025 (BSS) - A Chattogram court today sentenced five men to death for the murder of their neighbor in Anwara upazila, stemming from a longstanding dispute.
Judge of the Fourth Additional District and Sessions Court, Rozina Khan delivered the verdict against Nurul Afsar, Mohammad Rafiq, Md. Solaiman, Ahmed Mia, and Ilias, all residents of Chatri Union in Anwara upazila.
According to the case documents, on August 19, 2011, Abdur Shukur was called out of his home over the phone. He went missing and was later found dead in the Chatri area on August 21.
Following the incident, victim's son, Md. Mizan, filed a murder case with Anwara Police Station the same day.
After investigation, police submitted the charge sheet before the court against eight individuals.
The investigation officer stated that the killing was motivated by a prior conflict over setting a fishing net in a nearby canal. The accused reportedly lured Shukur out and killed him using a locally-made sharp weapon.
Following testimony from 10 out of 17 prosecution witnesses, the court convicted five of the accused and acquitted the remaining three due to lack of evidence.
Convicts Ilias and Nurul Afsar were present during the verdict, while the other three Ahmed Mia, Rafiq and Solaiman remained absconding. Arrest warrants were issued against them.
