Over 50,000 people flock to watch boat race in Sherpur

SHERPUR, Sept 7, 2025, (BSS)   – Over 50,000 people thronged the banks of the river to watch 100-year long traditional race (Nouka Baich) competition yesterday (6 September) in the Kamarer Char union in the sadar upazila of Sherpur district.

A large number of people, including men and women, enjoyed the event with great enthusiasm as banks of the river was overcrowded.   

President of Sherpur district unit of Jubo dal Md. Shafiqul Islam Masud attended as the chief guest in the boat race competition.

Joint conveners of Sherpur district unit of BNP Md Abu Rayhan Rupan and Kamrul Hasan, among others, were present on the occasion. 

Local leaders of BNP said boat race competitions have become rare nowadays.  They appreciated the organizers for holding such traditional boat race and urged them to organize the programme, which are part of our culture.

Historically, Bangladesh is a riverine country.  Our Bangali culture has been rich centering multidimensional aspects of rivers. Boat race is one of them.  Every year, boat race is held different regions of the country.
