RANGPUR, Sept 12, 2025 (BSS) - Police have arrested Manjurul Islam, a local Awami League (AL) leader, in connection with the killing of auto-rickshaw driver Manik Mia, who died during last year's student-led anti-discrimination movement in Rangpur city.

The arrest was made early today around 3:00am from Manjurul Islam's residence in the Darshana area of Rangpur city, confirmed Md Shahjahan Ali, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Tajhat Metropolitan Police Station, under Rangpur Metropolitan Police (RpMP).

"We arrested Manjurul Islam, the 53rd accused in the martyr Manik Mia murder case," OC Shahjahan Ali told BSS.

The case was filed at the Tajhat Police Station on June 6, 2025, following extensive investigations into the incident.

The victim, Manik Mia, 35, son of late Sekendar Ali of Purbo Ghaghot Para, ward no. 15 in Rangpur city, was shot and killed during a student protest near the Rangpur Model College Gate on July 18, 2024.

The demonstration, part of a wider anti-discrimination movement, sparked significant public outcry, leading to legal and political consequences in the region.

Police produced Manjurul Islam, 48, son of Mubarak Ali of Durgapur area under the Tajhat Police Station, before the Rangpur Metropolitan Magistrate Court, which subsequently sent him to jail.
