JHENAIDAH, Oct 26, 2025 (BSS) — A woman was hacked to death allegedly by her father-in-law at Purbapaikpara village under Manoharpur Union in Shailkupa upazila of the district early today. 

The deceased was identified as Lima Khatun, 25, wife of Abdur Rob and a mother of two children of the same village. 

The accused, 45-year-old Mukul Sheikh, is reportedly mentally disorder, according to family members. Police have detained the accused.

Police and locals said that the incident occurred around 5:00am when Lima went outside to use the toilet beside her house. Her father-in-law suddenly attacked her with a sharp machete, hitting her in the chest. 

Hearing her screams, family members rushed out and took her to Shailkupa Upazila Health Complex where the on-duty doctor declared her dead.

Health and Family Planning Officer of Shailkupa Upazila Health Complex Dr. Rashed Al Mamun said Lima was brought to the hospital around 5:30am with severe injuries and had already died before arrival, likely due to excessive bleeding.

Family members said Mukul Sheikh had long been suffering from mental instability and often turned violent, forcing relatives to keep him tied up at home at times.

Lima’s husband Abdur Rob said his father has long been mentally imbalanced, and even his elder uncle suffered from the same condition. 

The couple had two children. Abdur Rob has been left speechless after losing his wife in such a tragic manner.

Officer-in-Charge of Shailkupa Police Station Masum Khan said that Lima was killed after being struck with a sharp weapon. 

He said police detained the accused father-in-law immediately after the incident and the body has been sent to Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital morgue for postmortem. 

“We are investigating the case and will take legal action after verifying all aspects, including the mental condition of the accused,” he added.
