THAKURGAON, Nov 18, 2025 (BSS) - A court here today announced Poigam Ali, general secretary of Thakurgaon district BNP, as the chairman of Nargun Union Parishad under Sadar upazila following a recount of votes.

Subrata Bhowmik, Senior Judge of Thakurgaon Election Tribunal, Sadar Court, announced the verdict this afternoon.

Challenging the results of the previous Union Parishad election, Poigam Ali had filed a case with the Election Tribunal immediately after the election (Case No. 18/2022).

He alleged that his victory had been taken away and that he was denied justice because the trial was deliberately delayed during the autocratic regime of Sheikh Hasina.

After the fall of the Hasina government, when steps were taken to revive the case, the court ordered a recount on November 11.

In compliance with the court order, votes were publicly counted in the presence of both the petitioner and the defendant on Monday (November 17) in the court.

Based on this recount, the court declared Poigam Ali the winner by a margin of 104 votes over his opponent.

This marks Poigam Ali's fifth consecutive election as Union Parishad Chairman.

On Monday evening, shortly after the vote recount, BNP leaders and activists brought out a victory procession, and in a brief gathering in front of the district BNP office, Poigam Ali was greeted with flowers.

Mirza Faisal Amin, President of Thakurgaon District BNP, thanked the District Election Tribunal for ensuring justice and congratulated Poigam Ali on his victory.
