RANGPUR, Dec 12, 2025 (BSS) - A youth named Morsalin killed retired teacher and freedom fighter Yogesh Chandra Roy, 75 and his wife Suborna Roy, 60, after breaking into their home to steal Tk 8,000 to repay a loan, police said.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Md Marufat Hussaine revealed the details during a press briefing on Friday afternoon at the couple's home in Rahimapur village under Taraganj upazila.
Police arrested Morsalin, 22, early Friday from Shermast Balapara area of Alampur Union. He is a student of Taraganj Degree College and works as an assistant to a tiler.
The SP said that after being traced through information technology, Morsalin was detained and confessed during primary interrogation. Based on his statement, police recovered the handle of the axe used in the murders.
"Work is still underway to recover the axe," the SP added.
According to the confession, Morsalin owed about Tk 8,000 and decided to steal the money from the house where he had worked on tiling just two days before the killings. On Saturday night, he entered the house, hacking Suborna first and then Yogesh to death with the axe he had brought.
He then broke open a cupboard with a hammer in search of money but claimed he found nothing. While fleeing, he threw the axe into a nearby pond.
"The murders of a heroic freedom fighter and his wife are extremely sensitive. We are working to uncover every detail of the incident and ensure exemplary punishment," SP Marufat said.
The couple was found dead inside their home on Sunday morning (December 7) when neighbors, receiving no response after knocking, entered the house and discovered the bodies.
Later, their eldest son, Shoven Chandra Roy, filed a case with Taraganj Police Station against an unidentified assailant.
