2 AL leaders arrested in Manik murder case in Rangpur

RANGPUR, Dec 14, 2025 (BSS) - Police have arrested two Awami League (AL) leaders in the murder case of auto-rickshaw driver Manik Mia, who was killed on July 18 last year during the anti-discrimination student movement in Rangpur city.  

“We arrested AL leaders Md Aminul Islam alias Amir, 55, and Md Shafiqul Islam, 50, from the city’s Najirdigar area at 3:30 am on Sunday,” Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Tajhat police station Md Ataur Rahman told BSS at 8 pm tonight. 
 
Both are residents of the Najirdigar area under Tajhat police station of Rangpur metropolis.
 
Arrested Md Aminul Islam alias Amir and Md Shafiqul Islam are the accused in the martyr Manik Mia murder case filed at Tajhat police station of Rangpur Metropolitan Police on June 6, 2025.
 
Among them, Md Aminul Islam alias Amir is the Forest and Agriculture Affairs Secretary of Ward No. 31 Awami League and Md Shafiqul Islam is the General Secretary of the same ward unit. 
 
Earlier, Manik Mia, 35, son of late Sekendar Ali, of Purbo Ghaghot Para area in the city’s Ward No 15, was killed in police firing while taking part in the anti-discrimination student movement in the Rangpur Model College Gate area on July 18 last year. 
 
“We produced arrested AL leaders Md Aminul Islam alias Amir and Md Shafiqul Islam Manjurul Islam before the Rangpur Metropolitan Magistrate Court from where they were sent to jail,” the OC added.
